Trinity Prayer – Members Content
Most couples find it difficult to pray together. It is always best to start simply and establish a habit on modest requirements. The Couple’s Evening Prayer is a good place to start.
When you are ready, you can try the Trinity Prayer below which encourages deeper reflection and more personal revelation.
This simple format:
- incorporates worship of God the Father with affirmation of your spouse,
- promotes reconciliation and unity through the confession to Jesus of your limitations and failure to love,
- empowers you with graces from the Holy Spirit to help you become more loving in your marriage.
The Trinity Prayer is a great way to bring your day to closure, ensuring that you keep your unity intact and your love vibrant.
Tool: Trinity Prayer
Begin to pray together at least once a week. Pick a specific time, and if not sure how to pray, use the following format.
To the Father: Prayers of praise and thanks …for the blessing of the other. Give thanks for all that is good in your relationship.
To Jesus: Prayers of sorrow …for the times you failed to love as fully as you should. Ask forgiveness of Jesus.
To the Holy Spirit: Prayers for specific graces … for what you need to grow closer at this particular time (e.g. passion, wisdom, humility, compassion, restraint, ambition, enthusiasm etc.).
Close with the ‘Glory Be’
Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,world without end, Amen.
You can use this format for prayers on your own, with your spouse or with your children.
Stories of the Heart
We like the idea of praying together as a couple, but it’s a bit scary: we feel really vulnerable when we pray – after all, there’s no use having any pretenses with God! We’ve found the Trinity Prayer a great way to pray together. The first part is easy – there’s always lots of things for which we are grateful so it easy to get started on the prayer. The second part is the most challenging because it is difficult to admit to hurting each other. However it always brings us so close. And sometimes it’s easier to admit our sins to God first, it kind of breaks the ice when we know we should apologise but are being stubborn or cowardly. The third part lifts our spirits again – asking for whatever grace we need to love better always gives us optimism and energy.
We pray the Trinity Prayer with our children. They love the ‘thank you prayers’ and can go on for ages. The ‘sorry prayers’ are always a bit more difficult but I think it’s really good for them to hear us as parents admit making mistakes and asking for forgiveness. Even our teenagers take it all in. Then the ‘helping prayers’ are always lively and it often surprises us what they pray for – sometimes they are struggling with or worrying about something about which we had no idea.
